How to Play
Playing Crazy Quilt Solitaire is easy to learn. Here’s a quick rundown of the basic rules and gameplay:
- Setup: Two decks are used (104 cards total), and the cards are dealt in a unique “crazy quilt” pattern that forms an interwoven grid. This gives the game its name and a fun visual appeal – it looks like a quilt of cards! Your goal is to move all the cards from this quilt into the foundation piles.
- Free Moves: You can only move cards that have a short side free, meaning one of their shorter edges isn’t touching any other card. At the start, only about half the cards on the outer border of the quilt are free to move. As you remove those outer cards (like pulling loose threads), new cards from deeper in the quilt become free to play.
- Foundations: There are 8 foundation piles to fill. Four of them start with an Ace and must be built up in ascending order from Ace to King, and the other four start with a King and are built down in descending order to Ace – all by suit. For example, if you have an Ace of hearts, you’ll build that pile hearts 2, 3, 4… up to King. If you have a King of spades on a foundation, you’ll build that pile spades Queen, Jack, 10… down to Ace.
- Waste Pile: Besides the quilt layout and foundations, the game also has a waste pile. You can move a free card from the quilt to the waste pile only if it’s one rank higher or one rank lower than the current top card of the waste. This is a clever way to temporarily get cards out of the quilt and access the ones underneath. (And of course, if a card on the waste pile fits onto a foundation, you can move it there!) You also have a stock pile (the remaining cards after dealing the quilt) – you can flip cards from the stock onto the waste when no other moves are available.
- Objective: Like most solitaire games, the ultimate goal is to move every card to the foundation piles in the correct order. If you manage to sort all 104 cards onto the eight foundations, you win! Don’t worry if it’s tough – Crazy Quilt has a reputation for being tricky to win. Just have fun and enjoy the challenge, and remember you can always undo moves or retry for a better outcome.
