How to Play Forty Thieves

Setup:

• 10 tableau piles with 4 cards each, all face-up.
• The remaining cards form the stock pile.
• An empty space for the waste pile.
• Eight foundations, starting with Aces, to be built up by suit.

Rules of Forty Thieves

• Only one card may be moved at a time.
• Cards in the tableau can only be built down in suit (e.g., 9♣ on 10♣).
• You can move a card from the stock pile to the waste, and from the waste to the tableau or foundation.
• Empty tableau spaces can only be filled with a King.
• Once a card is placed on a foundation, it cannot be moved back.

Winning the Game

To win, you must successfully move all 104 cards to the eight foundation piles, respecting both suit and order.

Strategies for Forty Thieves

• Prioritize uncovering hidden cards in the tableau.
• Use the stock pile sparingly — try to make the most of each draw.
• Don’t rush to place Aces or low cards on foundations if they’re helping you build sequences in the tableau.
